Queen Catherine de Medici is one of the characters in the work-in-progress Petrus, which our dear Edu Díaz has intelligently embodied and presented to the festive audience of PhysFest in a segment titled Early Draft, as part of his strategy to promote the upcoming premiere.
In this preview performance, the Queen produces and presents her own show, telling the story of Petrus, a historical figure who inspired the classic Beauty and the Beast, and on whom the Canary Islands-born artist has been working for a long and passionate time.
Edu possesses great charisma and exceptional charm; without a doubt, he was born to be on stage. His large, expressive eyes, captivating smile, mannerisms, and intelligent innocence, his ability to be amazed by everything and make sure the audience notices, are his calling card. A character that unquestionably stays in your memory.
Added to this is his remarkable interpretive ability. He is an actor who gives himself fully and wholeheartedly. Watching how he inhabits the character in the hallways before, during, and after the show is what makes this profession a magical and addictive art form, and makes him an incomparable performer.
More elements can be added to this display of versatility. The Queen’s armor, with costume and makeup designed and created by another great figure of the scene, Pablo Jesús Gatto, a collaboration between the two artists that deserves celebration. Edu travels by canoe, rides a horse, creates shadow puppets, performs voice-overs, and also portrays Nostradamus and Petrus, two other characters from the piece that we will see in the full production.
It is worth noting that Petrus has already been written by Edu Díaz himself and is currently seeking financial support for its grand premiere.
Remember, the Queen needs your gold.
Time flew by far too quickly, and both the actor and the audience were left wanting more. For now, we will stay tuned for future developments and continue to follow his participation in the New York City Fringe 2026, where he will present for the second time his most recent monologue, LIPSTICK, at Chain Theater on April 5, 7, 16, and 19.
